Custom Jewelry FAQ

How does the custom ring process work?

Initial Consultation: Fill out the Custom Jewelry Inquiry to start the conversation. We’ll schedule a meeting to talk through ideas, timeline, and budget.

Design Review: You’ll get a design board with sketches and CAD renderings for approval.

3D Model: Wax or resin mockups let you confirm proportions before casting.

Casting & Finishing: The piece is made in my Portland studio. Fabrication, setting, and polishing all done in-house.

Final Reveal: You’ll receive photos, the final invoice, and arrange a pickup or insured shipping.

What metal is best for an engagement ring?

  • 14k or 18k Yellow Gold: Classic, low-maintenance warmth
  • Platinum: Crisp white, hypoallergenic, built for long wear
  • Mixed Metal: White gold or platinum head on a yellow band makes the center stone pop

I'll help guide your choice based on wear habits, lifestyle, and design.

How do I choose a center stone?

Diamonds: I source natural mined and lab-grown diamonds from certified ethical suppliers. We'll use the 4 Cs—cut, color, clarity, and carat—to find the right fit.

Heirloom or Vintage: I can reuse a family stone if it’s structurally sound and appropriate for the design.

Gemstones: I recommend sapphires and rubies for daily wear. Softer stones like emeralds can work with careful setting—I’ll provide options.

What design details matter?

  • Setting style: Prong, flush, bezel, halo—each creates a different profile and presence
  • Side stones: Size and shape affect balance and visual weight
  • Band width & profile: Subtle changes impact comfort and silhouette

How long does a custom ring take?

  • Design phase: 1–2 weeks
  • 3D model: 1–2 weeks
  • Casting & finishing: 2–5 weeks

Total: About 8 weeks on average. Rush timelines may be available. Complex designs and unique stones will take longer.

How much does a custom ring cost?

Most custom rings fall between $3,000 and $8,000, depending on:

  • Metal type
  • Center stone quality and size
  • Design complexity

Simpler solitaire designs with lab-grown are on the lower end. Higher carat diamonds or intricate work will be on the upper end.

Do you offer payment plans?

  • 50% deposit is due up front to begin your project, the remaining balance is due before pickup or shipping
  • Third-party financing is available—ask for details

  • Hands-on collaboration from sketch to the final polish
  • Try-on your samples and comparisons stones
  • Transparent pricing and quotes

  • Design flexibility, resizing, and ongoing care and cleaning services

I build pieces to be lived in and you can think of this as a chose your own adventure. You’ll be involved every step of the way or you can give some inspiration images then sit back and relax until you new piece is done!
